Counselling is a talking therapy that helps you to talk about your thoughts and your feelings, and how they affect your mood and day to day life.

If you have been recently diagnosed with a form of dementia or if you have been living with the symptoms for some time, life might be more difficult than before.

You might feel confused or anxious or you might experience emotions such as sadness, fear, loneliness. Things might appear complicated and hard, you might feel that you have lost interest in what you used to enjoy. Sharing how you feel with others might seem too difficult, or you might just not want to share.

Counselling is first of all a listening space, warm and confidential, in which you can share what you are going through and how you feel about it.

Counselling can help you manage your concerns or accept your diagnosis. It can also help you deal with everyday challenges and give you tools to express your feelings and emotions more easily.

An experience tailored to what you need

Each counselling journey is tailored to the person who is undertaking it.

We will work together to explore what is going on for you and what your priorities might be. How we work together, what we focus on and for how long, will be adapted to your individual needs and preferences, including your specific way of communicating.

We can make space for your emotions and feelings and we can take a more practical approach and work out together strategies to maintain a good quality of life. Often the work includes both.

I have many years of experience in working with people with dementia and I have seen the impact of person-centred work on how the person experiences themselves and the world.

How it works

We will have an initial session in which we can get to know each other and decide what we want to focus on and for how long.

I have put together session packages of 3, 6 or 10 sessions as having a clear idea of the journey often helps people feel more comfortable.

Sessions last 50 minutes to an hour and it will be a confidential conversation between yourself and the counsellor. I offer in-person or Zoom sessions (or a blend of these).
